Gap Credit Card: Does It Make Sense to Apply? | Credit Card Review
The Gap Credit Card from Synchrony Bank is great for earning you discounts on Gap store purchases and not much else. We don’t recommend using this card as a primary everyday credit card because many better options exist. If you’re looking to only open a single new credit card account, you should pick a flat-rate cash back credit card over the Gap Credit Card. Alternatively, since the Gap Credit Card doesn’t come with an annual fee, you can always get this as a secondary card to be used whenever shopping with Gap.
This card is good for...
- Earning a 10% discount at Gap on Tuesdays
- Getting rewards for your Gap Inc. brand purchases
This card is bad for...
- Those who want a card for everyday use
- Anyone who tends to carry a balance on their credit card due to the high APR (24.99%)
Review: Our Thoughts on the Gap Credit Card
The Gap Credit Card can get you some decent discounts at Gap Inc. stores, though it makes for a bad primary credit card. Gap Inc. purchases earn cardholders a 5% rewards rate, 10% discounts every Tuesday, and other deals that make it a worthwhile consideration. For all other purchases, there are many solid cash back credit cards that can give you significantly better savings. Since this card has no annual fee, it makes sense to apply for all the additional discounts it gives, but use something else as your day-to-day card. If you are looking for just one credit card to open, we recommend using either the Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card. Both of these other options can provide you with great savings both inside and outside of Gap stores.
The best feature of the Gap Credit Card is the 10% Tuesdays. When you use the card at Gap or Gap Factory on Tuesdays, your bill will receive a 10% discount. That’s significantly better than what you can get with any other credit cards. This is the level of spending we’ve come to expect from big discount sites like Ebates, traditionally and not from credit card rewards. This perk alone makes signing up for the Gap Credit Card worth it.
The other big selling point of the Gap Credit Card may be its Silver Status membership, though we caution against it. All the benefits involved may sound impressive, though the overall cost for them is questionable. Silver status grants you things like free basic alterations, free shipping, and a 20% points dividend each quarter. However, to qualify for these you need to accumulate 5,000 points each year. That means you must be using the Gap Credit Card quite heavily. Since we explained this card isn’t good on everyday purchases, that incremental increase in value from Silver status is probably not worth the opportunity cost of skipping out on using a much better card.
Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a card to get discounts at any of the Gap Brand stores, including Old Navy and Banana Republic, this is the card to get. However, you should not use this as your primary credit card.
Gap Credit Card Benefits & Features
The Gap Credit Card awards five points per dollar whenever you shop at Gap Inc. brand stores. Stores included under this category include Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. Purchases at all other stores will earn just one point per dollar. All these reward points can be traded in for vouchers that you can use at Gap. For every 500 points, you earn you can receive a $5 reward. At that kind of redemption, this card has a 5% rewards rate at Gap Inc. stores, and a 1% rate on all other spending.

As we mentioned above, what makes this card truly worthwhile is the 10% Tuesdays benefit. Every Tuesday, you can receive a 10% discount on your purchases at Gap, Gap Factory, gap.com and gapfactory.com. You won’t be able to swing that kind of discount on any other credit card. Note that the 10% discount doesn’t apply to any other Gap brand. That means you can’t 10% off Old Navy or Banana Republic stores.
When you get approved for the card you have 90 days to take advantage of a 15% discount on your first purchase. The offer will only be applied to a single receipt on Gap branded purchases made through either Gap.com or Gapfactory.com. The terms for the card do not mention this applying to in-store purchases.
The two discounts mentioned above cannot be combined. They also cannot be combined with other offers, like an employee discount.
Earning Bonus Points on the Gap Credit Card
There are three ways to earn up to 4,000 bonus points with the Gap Credit Card. All are relatively simple. You can earn 500 bonus points after you tie an e-mail to your account, and another 500 if you enroll in paperless billing. There is also 3,000 more points you can earn if you make a qualifying purchase outside of the Gap brand stores and it posts to your account within 30 days of account opening. Together, these bonuses are worth $40 in Gap rewards. This is significantly lower than the welcome bonuses of other no-annual-fee credit cards.
Gap Silver Benefits
Cardholders who accumulate 5,000 points (not including points earned through bonuses) within one calendar year will qualify for extra perks through Gap Silver membership. You must earn the 5,000 points every year you want the status to apply. The extra benefits include things like free basic alterations, and free online shipping.
Silver members also receive a 20% tier bonus to their points each quarter. That means if you earned 1,000 points, you’ll get an extra 200 thrown your way. With this bonus, your rewards rate becomes 6% at Gap Stores and 1.2% everywhere else -- that is once you hit Silver status. There are other criteria you must meet to qualify for this 20% bonus, such as having your account remain in good standing.
How Does the Gap Credit Card Compare to Other Credit Cards?
The best way to judge a card’s worth is by comparing it to other available options. We took a look at how the Gap Credit Card performs when matched against leading cash back credit cards. Keep in mind that the Gap card has no annual fee. Therefore, you can always get it in conjunction these offers for a relatively low cost.
Gap Credit Card vs Chase Freedom Unlimited®
The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of the best all-around cash back credit cards. It gives you 1.5% back on all your purchases, no matter the category. That is 50% better than what the Gap Credit Card can provide you. You also can qualify for a $150 bonus after you spend $500 on the card within the first 3 months of account opening. All the rewards you earn with the Chase Freedom Unlimited® are far more flexible. You get straight cash back and statement credit, instead of the gift card rewards earned through the Gap Credit Card. For most people, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® will be the better choice on almost all fronts because of these points. While it cannot match the 5% rewards rate at Gap or the 10% Tuesdays, it will be better for you when it comes to all other purchases. If you are going to apply for just one card, make it this one.
Gap Credit Card vs Citi® Double Cash Credit Card
The Citi® Double Cash Credit Card is another solid cash back card that makes for an excellent everyday option. It comes with 1% cash back on all purchases, no matter the category. You double your cash back when those purchases are paid off. That is better than the Chase Freedom Unlimited® we described above. However, unlike the Chase Freedom Unlimited® or the Gap Credit Card, the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card doesn’t come with any welcome bonus. Therefore, its short-term value won’t be as good. If you’re okay with that trade-off, the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card is probably the best long-term option for you. Like the Gap Credit Card, the Citi® Double Cash Credit Card has no annual fee.

GAP Regional Development Administration - What's GAP?
THE SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA PROJECT (GAP)
The Southeastern Anatolia Project (with its Turkish acronym GAP) is a major and comprehensive initiative, also giving a brand to Turkey in international arena, that aims at improving the income level and life quality of people living in the region , reducing regional disparities and contributing to country’s economic and social development by mobilizing and utilising the resources of the region.
At the very outset, the GAP was perceived as a programme to develop water and land resources in the region and planned as a package that comprised of 13 individual projects on irrigation and energy production on the Euphrates-Tigris basins. Altogether, these projects envisaged the construction of 22 dams, 19 hydraulic power plants (HPP) and irrigation networks for an area of approximately 1.8 million hectares. In the GAP Regional Plan, developed in 2002, the GAP Programme of the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (SHW) this area was stated as approximately 1.8 million hectares.Upon the development of Master Plan back in 1989, the GAP transformed into an integrated regional development project now also comprising infrastructure development in agriculture, industry, transportation, education, health and urban & rural facilities.
Parallel to worldwide developments taking place in the 90s, the Southeastern Anatolia Project adopted the philosophy of sustainable development and based its activities upon the principles of human development, participation, equity and social justice.
Today, besides the program to develop water resources, the GAP is being implemented as an integrated regional development project on the basis of sustainable human development that embraces investments in virtually all sectors.
9 provinces in the Southeastern Region of Turkey (Adıyaman, Batman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kilis, Mardin, Siirt, Şanlıurfa and Şırnak) comprise the GAP Region. The region’s share in total surface area of the country is 9.7%.

Integrated Project Approach
The great change to take place following the introduction of irrigation to vast tracts of land in Southeastern Anatolia will affect all social and economic sectors in the region. At the first stage, this change will start with the impact of much larger agricultural output on non-agricultural sectors including industry, trade and transportation. At the second stage, there will be new dimensions since non-agricultural sectors will interact and affect each other. This chain reaction starting with agricultural irrigation and then extending to industry and services will create investment and development opportunities in many areas while, at the same time, give rise to some significant needs in social and physical infrastructure.
Sustainable Human Development
The GAP is a human-centred regional development project. All public investments serve as instruments of equitable, fair, accessible and sustainable development. The primary goal is the happiness of people.
The concept ‘sustainable human development’ means the creation of an environment where people’s preferences and potential are fully realized through the optimum utilization of natural and human resources without curbing the means and opportunities of future generations. This approach also means due consideration of issues and areas such as society, economy, culture, equity in development, gender equality, health, physical planning, agriculture and environment while human being stands at the centre of all.
The GAP aims at materializing sustainable human development in the region through rational utilization and management of resources in the region, development of human resources and rational allocation of national resources. It also envisages the mitigation of disparities between the GAP Region and other regions of the country and contributing to a more equitable development. In this context, social, cultural and environmental researches and practices based on such researches constitute significant components of the project.
Upon the emergence of the concept of sustainability as the main focus of issues related to development worldwide, each country set out to determine its own sustainable development criteria with regard to its specific circumstances. To asses Turkey’s needs in this area, the GAP Administration organized a seminar in Şanlıurfa in March 1995 together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In this seminar where there was active consultation and discussion with the participation of development actors in the context of GAP, the following objectives were set in the contest of sustainability on the basis of both seminar conclusions and objectives of the GAP Master Plan:
- Boosting investments so as to improve economic circumstances in the region as much as possible,
- Improving health and education services so as to close the gaps with country averages,
- Creating new employment opportunities,
- Improving urban life quality and infrastructure so as to make it possible to create healthier urban environments,
- Completing rural infrastructure so as to allow for optimal development in irrigation,
- Improving means of transportation both within the region and with other regions,
- Responding to infrastructure needs of existing and to be established industries,
- Prioritizing the protection of water sources, land and air as well as associated ecosystems,
- Promoting participation in decision making and project implementation processes.
In the context of GAP, major components of sustainable development are stated as social, agricultural, physical, spatial and environmental sustainability as well as economic viability. Environmental and cultural sustainability depends on the sustainability of natural resources and protection of environmental and cultural heritage. Economic viability is closely associated with the implementation of high-yielding projects, employment opportunities, economic development and private sector participation. Social sustainability requires the adoption of the principles of participation, equity, fairness and human resources development.
Meanwhile, sustainable development has its ground composed of participating public and private sectors as well as people. In this composition, the public sector has to provide the infrastructure necessary for sustainable development, the private sector is expected to materialize investments mostly in industry, and the people has to be involved in all processes from planning to implementation.
Together with the inclusion of the concept of sustainable human development in GAP literature, the project expanded its scope to incorporate environmental and human dimensions and set as its basic goal to improve the quality of life in the region. Under this approach, all projects and practices including physical investments for economic growth are assessed in terms of their contribution to human development.
Ensuring efficiency in investments and materializing socioeconomic development require the coordinated launching of complementary investments in terms of time and space. The GAP Master Plan addressing this need was completed in April 1989.
